How to Write a Resume for Remote Jobs (That Beats the ATS)
August 2, 2026 · 6 min read
A remote job posting can attract hundreds of applicants, and most resumes are screened by software — an Applicant Tracking System, or ATS — before a human ever sees them. So a great remote resume has to do two things at once: pass the filter, and convince a busy hiring manager in seconds that you can be trusted to deliver from a distance.
Here's how to write a resume that does both.

Instead of 'responsible for customer emails,' write 'handled 60+ customer emails a day with a 98% satisfaction rating.' Numbers make you concrete and credible. Put your strongest, most relevant results near the top — most resumes get a first scan of only a few seconds, so the best evidence has to be impossible to miss.
Make your remote-readiness obvious
Name the tools you know, mention any experience working independently or across locations, and use language that signals self-management and clear communication. If you've never worked remotely, show the equivalent: times you managed your own projects, hit deadlines without supervision, or coordinated with people you rarely saw in person.
Beat the software filter (ATS)
The ATS scans your resume for keywords from the job description. Mirror the exact words the listing uses for the role and its required skills — honestly, only for skills you actually have. Use a simple, single-column layout the software can read (avoid burying text in tables, columns or graphics), and save in the format the employer asks for. This isn't gaming the system; it's making sure a real person gets to see you.
Tailor every application
One generic resume sent everywhere is the slowest path to an interview. Adjust your keywords and top bullets to each listing before you apply. It feels slower, but tailored resumes get far more responses — so you do less work for more interviews. Pair it with a short, specific cover letter and, where it fits your field, a one-page work sample.

FAQ
What is an ATS and why does it matter?
An Applicant Tracking System is software that scans resumes for keywords before a human reviews them. If your resume doesn't match the listing's language and format, a person may never see it.
How do I make my resume ATS-friendly?
Mirror the exact keywords from the job listing (honestly), use a simple single-column layout without text buried in tables or graphics, and save in the requested format.
How do I show remote skills with no remote experience?
Highlight the equivalent: managing your own projects, meeting deadlines without supervision, clear written communication, and any tools you know.
Where can I get a resume optimizer?
The free Remote Job Starter Kit includes an ATS Résumé Optimizer, and The Remote Work Blueprint covers the full resume-and-application system.
